Civil Disobedience An American Tradition For Achieving Social & Political Change

January 23, 2019

Presented by Rebecca Garrard, NYS Poor People’s Campaign Steering Committee Member

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr Day, join us in exploring how civil disobedience has been used as an important tool in protesting injustices and securing rights and liberties at numerous times during this country’s history.  From the fight for equal rights for black people and a woman’s right to vote to more current stances against taxation of farmlands and gun violence within our schools, civil disobedience has been a concept embedded in the history of this country since the time of Henry David Thoreau.  This presentation will provide an overview of this practice throughout the last century, and include time for discussion.  Appropriate for mature children and adults, this workshop will attempt to provide both the basics of the topic as well as historical details to interest the most seasoned historian.
